District (Kreis) : Vulkaneifel
Verbandsgemeinde : Verbandsgemeinde Gerolstein
Additions: 1969 Bewingen, Hinterhausen, Lissingen; 1973 Büscheich, Gees, Michelbach, Müllenborn, Oos, Roth

Wappen von Gerolstein/Arms (crest) of Gerolstein
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms are derived from the arms of the counts of Blankenheim-Gerolstein and identical to the arms of Blankenheim. Gerhard von Blankenheim founded Gerolstein in 1330, and the village received city rights already in 1336. The counts of Blankenheim-Gerolstein ruled the village until 1423. Later rulers never changed the arms.

The great seal of Gerolstein showed the arms over a city wall and two saints as supporters, St. Christopher and St. Anna. These were not added to the arms proper.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
