(de) In Gold ein schwarzer, nach rechts blickender rot bewehrter Adler mit gespreizten Flügeln, aufgesperrtem Schnabel und vorgeschlagener Zunge.
Origin/meaning
The arms show a canting eagle (Adler/Arend). The eagle already appears on the coins of the Hersfeld Abbey, struck in Arnstadt in 1200. On slightly younger seals the eagle is seen between two towers of a city gate. The eagle itself is canting, from Adlerstadt or eagle-city. Later seals always showed the eagle, mostly without the towers. The complete armorial bearings of Arnstadt, which are no longer used, showed a helmet with a mural crown and an eagle as crest.
