Wappen von Rothenburg/Oberlausitz

Official blazon

(de) In Blau ein sich verjüngender silberner Zinnenturm mit Satteldach und geschlossenem Tor; beseitet von zwei grünen Dornenzweigen mit je drei goldenen Rosen; darüber die Jahreszahl 1268.

Origin/meaning

According to Bensing (1984) the arms were supposedly granted in 1347 by Emperor Charles IV. The arms historically showed a red castle (Rothen-Burg) as a canting element. The rose branches could have been a decorative element on the old medieval seals. The design appears clearly in the seal from the city made in 1698 as well as on another 17th century seal.

The current arms were adopted after 1945 and show the tower now in silver on a blue field and with the date 1268, the first time the town was supposedly mentioned. According to Bensing the date, however, was already added in 1815. Postcards from around 1900, Siebmacher (1885) and Hupp (1898) do not show the date however.
