The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1325. As many other seals of that time, it showed a castle to indicate the fact that Köthen was a city. Origin/meaning
The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1325. As many other seals of that time, it showed a castle to indicate the fact that Köthen was a city. Köthen probably was a walled city already in the early 12th century. The colours have been used since the 19th century.
