Origin/meaning
The arms show the arms of Hohenzollern, with in the first quarter the letter R as a local symbol.
Roth became a city at the end of the 13th or early in the 14th century. The oldest known seals date from the 14th century (mentioned in 1340, known since 1392). The seals show the complete arms of the Margraves of Nürnberg, including helmets and crests, who ruled the area and probably granted the city rights. A smaller seal from 1400 already shows the present arms. The Hohenzollern arms were also used as part of the arms of the Margraves of Nürnberg. The arms have not really changed ever since. The colour of the R is known since 1718.
In 1819 the black fields were changed into blue fields, the Bavarian colours. Also another R was placed in the fourth quarter. These arms have been used for a long part of the 19th century. In 1937 the old arms were restored.
