The arms were based on the historical arms of the city, which were based on the old seal.
The previous arms were granted on December 16, 1909, in slightly different colours. The chequy bar is derived from the arms of the counts of the Mark, who granted the city rights in 1396. The origin of the fleur-de-lis is not known, but is known from the seals since 1508.
