Origin/meaning

Wildungen was founded in the middle of the 13th century. The oldest seal, dating from 1258 shows the Count of Thüringen as a mounted knight (the city was a possession of the Counts of Thüringen). The next seal, dating from 1262 shows the star of Waldeck, as the city was now a possession of the Counts of Waldeck. Later seals showed the star, with an image of a woman in the base of the shield. Both the arms with and without the woman have been used during the centuries. In the 18th century the black star in gold, was changed to a golden star in black, to distinguish the arms of the city from those of Waldeck.

Until 1908 the name of the city was Nieder-Wildungen.
