State : Thüringen

Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on June 17, 1991.
The black cross is the arms of the Abbey and State of Fulda, to which a large part of the district historically belonged. The upper left part shows the arms of Sachsen, as in later history nearly all the district was part of the duchies Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach and Sachsen-Meiningen.
The lower part shows a beech branch, which is a canting symbol for the Buchgau region in the Southern part of the district (Buche-beech).
Until 1991 the district used the arms below (colours unknown to me):
Literature: Ulle, 1993.
