Origin/meaning

The oldest known seal probably dates from the early 14th century, but is known since 1347. The seal shows the complete arms of the Hohenzollern family, with the quartered shield and the dog as crest. The city was a possession of the family.

In the late 15th century and early 16th century, only the quartered shield was mentioned as arms for the city. Also in 1819 the city adopted only the quartered shield. In the middle of the 19th century the helmet and crest were again added and the arms have not changed since.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
