MUNDERKINGEN
State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Alb-Donau Kreis (until 1973 Ehingen)
German | In Silber ein golden gekrönter roter Löwe, rechts oben begleitet von einem sechsstrahligen roten Stern. |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
Munderkingen was founded in 1260 by the Lords of Emerkingen, and became a possession of the Dukes of Austria in the 1280s. The city remained Austrian until 1805.
The oldest seal dates from 1289 and shows already the lion and the star. The lion is the lion of the Habsburg family, Dukes of Austria. The star is likely a local symbol to distinguish the arms from similar arms with a lion. Later seals and images all show the same composition, but the position of the star differs widely.
The present arms were officially granted in 1956 and are based on an image from 1614.
