The oldest known seal of the city dates from the 14th century and shows an Emperor on a throne. The second seal from 1597 shows the imperial eagle. To distinguish the arms from other arms with the same eagle, a letter P was placed on the tail of the eagle. This composition was used on seals and as arms until the late 19th century. In the late 19th century the P was placed in a breast-shield and the arms were granted accordingly.
Only in the Kaffee Hag albums different arms appear. The origin thereof is not known.
