Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 6, 1953 and again on June 3, 1977.

The arms are known as such since the 16th century, when they appear on the local seals. Ever since the seals and arms have shown the same composition. The striped lion is the lion of Hessen, the chevrons are taken from the arms of the Lords of Eppstein. From 1185-1535 the city was a possession of the Lords of Eppstein(-Königstein), In 1492 the Counts of Hessen acquired several rights and possessions in the city, hence the addition of the lion. In 1581 the city became part of the State of Mainz, but the arms remained unchanged.
