State:Niedersachsen
District (Kreis):Lüneburg
Samtgemeinde:Samtgemeinde Bardowick

Wappen von Bardowick/Arms (crest) of Bardowick
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms show a castle in front of which is placed a small shield with three carrots.

Bardowick was an important city in the early Middle Ages. It was completely destroyed in 1189 by Henry the Lion. It never regained its city rights nor its importance. The arms are derived from the old seal of Bardowick, probably dating from the 16th century. It shows a castle as a symbol of its former importance. The origin of the carrots is unknown, it has been said that they are a symbol of the agriculture in the area. In the Kaffee Hag albums of the early 20th century the arms were shown with a different colour of the small shield, see below.
