Origin/meaning

The County of Sponheim (German:Grafschaft Sponheim) was a small independent territory in the Holy Roman Empire that lasted from the 11th century until 1804. The name comes from the town of Sponheim, where the counts had their original residence. In 1804 it was divided by the Kingdom of Prussia and the Grand-Duchy of Oldenburg.

The arms show chequy field of silver and red, which can be seen in many municipal arms in the region.

Lower Sponheim

Around 1225, the county was divided in two, with each portion ruled by a different branch of the House of Sponheim(-Kreuznach). Only in 1417 the two counties were again united. The largest part was Lower Sponheim, but this was also the line that got extinct, and thus was reunited with Upper Sponheim.

Lower Sponheim used a variation of the arms of (Upper) Sponheim:
