DIEPHOLZ
State : Niedersachsen
District (Kreis) : Diepholz
Additions : 1972 Aschen, Heede, Sankt Hülfe
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The lion is derived from the arms of the counts of Diepholz. The village got city rights in 1380 from Johann von Diepholz. The oldest seal of the city, known since 1461 already shows the lion in a very unusual way. The arms were derived from the seal and have never been changed. The colours are also derived from the arms of the counts, although the colour of the crown has been both gold and red through the years.
The arms of the counts of Diepholz does not show the lion similar to the arms of the city. In the arms of the counts (see also the arms of the district), the lion is shown as passant. When and why the lion is depicted like this is not known.
