Official blazon
In Silber ein von einer eintorigen Zinnenmauer in braunem Ziegelstein umgebenes Gebäude mit einem davorstehenden Turm links und einem aufgesetzten Turm rechts, braunem Mauerwerk, roten Dächern und goldenen Turm- und Dachspitzen; zwischen den Türmen schwebt ein schwarzes Schild, darin ein nach rechts steigender goldener Löwe mit roter Krone, Krallen und gespaltenem Schwanz.
Origin/meaning
The arms have been used since the 17th century, but the composition of castle and shield already appeared on the late 14th century seal of the city. The castle or walled city symbolises the city itself. The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of Reuss in the 14th century. From 1951-1991 the small shield with the lion was replaced by a hammer and spindle, symbols for the local industry, see below.
In 1991 the historical arms were restored.
