Gaildorf received city rights in 1404 from King Ruprecht I. The oldest seal dates from the same time and shows a shield with in the upper half two crossed clubs and in the lower half a raft. The clubs are the symbol of the Erbschenken of Limpurg, who at the time ruled the city.
