The oldest seal is known since the late 13th century and shows, as do all later seals, a castle on a small mountain, with a lion in the base of the shield, and the town's initial on the main tower. The lion is the lion of the Welfen dynasty, who ruled the city for many centuries. In the early 18th century the two smaller towers were added.
Even though the size and shape of the towers has changed considerably during the centuries (see below), the composition as such did not change.
