DORNUM
State : Niedersachsen
District (Kreis) : Aurich (until 1976 Norden)
Additions : 1972 Schwittersum; 2001 Dornumersiel (19?? Dornumergrode), Nesse (1972 Nessmersiel, Westdorf)
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1961.
The arms show a bear, which is derived from the arms of the Attena family. Before 1400 there were 3 castles in Dornum, the Wester-, Oster and Norderburg. All were destroyed in 1514. The Attena family, who owned the Norderburg, were the most powerful family in the area.
