BURKHEIM
State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald (until 1973 Freiburg)
Incorporated into : 1975 Oberrotweil (1977 Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl)
Official blazon
(de) In Silber eine rote Zinnenmauer mit fünf Türmen und geöffnetem Tor.
Origin/meaning
Burkheim received city rights in 1300 and was at the time a possession of the Lords of Üsenberg. The oldest seal of the city dates from the same time and shows a canting castle (from Burg-heim, Burg=castle). The present style of the castle dates from a seal from 1500. The image was placed in a shield and adopted as arms in 1962.
The colours are derived from the colours of Austria, as the city belonged to Austria from 1330-1797.
