Origin/meaning

The arms were not officially granted, but were adopted after a referendum in 1990.

The upper part shows the lion and the stars of Thüringen, symbolising that the district is in the heart of Thüringen. The base shows the Unstrut river. The green colour symbolises the fertile soil.
