Unter dreimal von Silber und Blau geteiltem Schildhaupt in Gold ein rot gezungter schwarzer Adler

Origin/meaning

Hilpolstein, or Stein as it was called initially, received its name and city rights in the early 14th century from the Lords of Stein. The oldest seals date from the same time and show the eagle on a mountain, the arms of the Von Stein family, and in the head of the shield a single silver bar in blue. The present four bars appear in the 17th century. The silver and blue bars are either taken from the Stein arms, or from the arms of the Wittelsbach family (the ruling family of Bayern), who acquired the city in 1386.
