Origin/meaning

The upper part of the arms show a Stone Age grave, as many of those monolithic structures can be found in the municipality. It also indicates the longtime inhabitation of the area. The golden colour symbolises the sandy soils. The red and golden colours are also the colours of the Corvey Abbey, to which the area belonged sfrom 1037-1252 as well as of the diocese of Münster, to which the Stavern belonged from 1252 until 1803. The blue field and the division line symbolise the Nordradde river in the municipality. The water-mill wheel symbolises the large watermill in Bruneforth in the Nordradde. The mill was already mentioned in the 14th century.
