Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1908.

Recklinghausen became a city in 1230 and the oldest seal, which dates from the same time, already shows this image. Recklinghausen belonged to the State of Köln and the key is thus the patron saint of the city and State, St. Peter. All later seals use the same image.
