ESENS

State : Niedersachsen
District (Kreis) : Wittmund
Samtgemeinde : Samtgemeinde Esens

Wappen von Esens/Arms (crest) of Esens
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

Esens was granted city rights between 1531 and 1540. The arms were devised at the same time and show the city tower and fence as symbols for the new city. The bear is taken from the arms of the Attena family, who had their main castle in Esens.
The brick is taken from a local legend, that states that during a siege in the early 16th century a dancing-bear broke loose and threw bricks at the attacking forces.

The arms were originally granted with a mural crown with two branches on each side.

Although the composition has been basically the same, there have been several variations of the arms, as shown below.

Coat of arms (crest) of Esens

The arms in the Wapen- en Vlaggenboek van Gerrit Hesman (1708)
Wappen von Esens/Coat of arms (crest) of Esens

The arms as shown in 1891
Wappen von Esens/Coat of arms (crest) of Esens

The arms by Hupp in the Kaffee Hag albums +/- 1925
Blason de Esens

The arms in the town (source)
