Origin/meaning
The arms are known since the 14th century, as they appeared on a tower in the town dating from the 14th century. The arms also appeared on 16th century borderstones, and in 1600 also on the local seal. The oldest seal showes the wheel of the State of Mainz and the arms of Archbishop Heinrich von Virneburg of Mainz, who granted the city rights. Later seals show the wheel of Mainz and the key, but the key placed below the wheel. The double wheel is the arms of the city of Mainz and the key the symbol of St. Peter.
