Gespalten von Gold und Rot; vorne ein linksgewendeter, mit einer silbernen Schräglinksleiste überdeckter, rot bewehrter schwarzer Löwe; hinten schräg gekreuzt ein silberner Stößel und ein silberner Kupferhammer mit goldenen Stielen.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 30, 1954.

The arms are based on the old seals of the city. The oldest known seal of Kupferberg dates from 1364 and shows only the lion of Bamberg. The city was a possession of the Bishops of Bamberg. The present arms, which combine the lion of Bamberg with some miner's tools as symbols for the copper (Kupfer) mining in the area, appear on the second seal dating from 1592. The colours are known since 1603. The arms have thus not changed, except for the period between 1819 and 1850 when the lion of Bamberg was replaced by the diamonds of Bayern. The State of Bamberg became part of Bayern in 1803.
