Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1956, but have been used since 1936.

The lion is derived from the arms of the Counts of Sayn, who acquired the area in 1220. Prior to 1220 the area belonged to the Lords of Freusburg, whose arms are shown in the left half (three boar's heads).
