Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on July 11, 1890.

The arms represent the four main historic parts of the County. The 1st quarter has the arms of the ancient Earldom of Buchan, the 2nd those of the Earldom of Mar, the 3rd those of the Lordship of Garioch, and the 4th those of the Chief of Clan Gordon, for Strath­bogie and the other Gordon lands in the County
