Hilpolstein, or Stein as it was called initially, received its name and city rights in the early 14<sup>th</sup> century from the Lords of Stein. The oldest seals date from the same time and show the eagle on a mountain, the arms of the Von Stein family, and in the head of the shield a single silver bar in blue. The present four bars appear in the 17<sup>th</sup> century.
