Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 18, 1965 and confirmed on November 20, 1972.

The arms show in the right half the arms of the Margraves of Nürnberg from the dynasty of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The eagle is the arms of Brandenburg. The left half shows the arms of the city of Nürnberg. Both the Margraves and the city of Nürnberg had many possessions in the district.

The lower part of the arms shows symbols for agriculture and industry.
