Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on ??-??-1964.

Ellar received city rights in 1372 from Count Eberhard of Katzenelnbogen, but the town never really developed into a city. From 1408 the town was ruled by the Counts of Nassau-Katzenelnbogen. The oldest known, 15th century, seal shows two shields, each with a lion. Behind the two shields, St. Maximianus, the patron saint, was seen.

In 1964 the two small arms were combined and the saint was removed. The red lion is the lion of Katzenelnbogen, the golden lion is the lion of Nassau.
