Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 1, 1960.

According to history the first arms of the city were granted in 1562 by Emperor Ferdinand I. However, no images or seals exist until the 18th century. These seals show the imperial orb, which became politically unacceptable in 1818, when the city became part of Bayern. The arms thus were changed, on a divided shield, the cross was placed in the upper half and a ball in the lower half. In 1953 the above arms were adopted, which are a combination between the two, an orb on a divided shield.
