Origin/meaning
The arms are devised in 1938.
The arms are based on a seal of the city, dating from 1521, but probably older. It shows a bishop (it is unknown who it is, either St. Suitbert, St. Lambertus or bishop Engelbert of Köln) holding in his hand a shield with the lion of the Counts of Berg, who owned the area in the Middle Ages.
The arms on a municipal stamp (1892) |
Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
