Origin/meaning

The arms are already known since the 13th century for the city. The arms show the local patron saint, St. Margareth, killing the dragon. The original arms showed the saint facing the other direction, in the 17th century the present arms appeared. The small shield shows the cross of the Fulda Abbey, as the city was first a loan of the Fulda Abbey and from 1326-1806 it was a possession of the Abbey.
