Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on February 11, 1998.
The arms are based on the oldest known seals of the city, known since 1413. The original composition is canting; the forest of the Princes (Fürsten) of Brandenburg and showed a tree with bird and two shields with the eagle of Brandenburg. Later one of the shields was replaced by the eagle of the Piast dynasty, Kings of Poland and Silezia, but also rulers of the (former) State of Lebus, to which the city belonged in the 13th century.
