Gespalten von Gold und Rot; vorn geteilt, oben im mit neun roten Herzen bestreuten Feld ein reißender, nach vorn schreitender, rotgezungter blauer Löwe, unten eine rotbewehrte, nach vorn zeigende schwarze Bärentatze; hinten, über fünf Mal gezinnter Mauer mit offenem Tor, elf Mal gezinntem Torbogen und silbernem Fallgatter, drei spitz und blau bedachte, dreifach gefensterte silberne Türme mit goldenen Kugeln.

Origin/meaning

The oldest seal of Nienburg dates from the early 13^th century and shows a castle with three towers, with a small shield above the middle tower. Unfortunately it is not clear what arms the shield showed.

The second seal dates from the late 13^th century and shows a divided shield, with on the right half the two bear claws of the Counts of Hoya, and in the left half the castle. The counts of Hoya acquired the city in 1215. When the city was acquired by the Dukes of Celle, the lion of Celle was added and one of the claws was removed. The arms have not changed since.
