Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on June 1, 1899.
The composition already appears on the seals of the city from 1227 and show the city itself, with a small shield of the Margraviate of Meissen, in which the city was situated at the time. The small shield showed different arms from 1227-1305, i.e. a divided shield with in one half three pales and in the other the lion (see also Leipzig and Chemnitz), which were the arms of the Margraviate at the time.
Although the wall and towers, as well as the colours of the small shield, were shown differently during the centuries, the basic composition is unchanged since 1305.
