Origin/meaning

The arms are canting, showing a red castle (Rothenburg = red castle). The arms are rather old and are first mentioned in 1260. All seals and most pictures of the arms through the centuries all show a red castle. The shape of the castle changes with the time and is shown according to the style of the time. Only in the 16th and 17^th century the imperial eagle was also used in arms for the city.
