Origin/meaning

The arms were first granted on August 15, 1911 and confirmed with small changes in colour in 1970.

The arms show the local patron saint, St. George killing the dragon. The composition of St. George already appears in the oldest known seal of the city, dating from around 1400. Ever since the saint appears on the seals, and later on the arms of the city.
