State : Niedersachsen
Additions : 1931 Hadeln, Neuhaus an der Oste
Incorporated into : 1977 Cuxhaven

Wappen von Land Hadeln

Official blazon

(de)

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 31, 1931.

The arms show St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the seafarers as well as of the main town in the historical Land Hadeln, Altenbruch. The seals of the former territory as well as of the coins struck in Otterndorf, all show St. Nicholas. The colours were determined in 1931, as no historical colours were known.

In 1933 the arms were abandoned, as the Nazi government did not approve of saints in heraldry. The district received new arms, with two crossed horse-heads and a wavy base. The horse-heads are a typical decoration on the houses in Northern Germany, the base referred to the coast and sea. The arms were used until 1945, when the old arms were restored.

Unfortunately I have no image of these arms, any image is welcome !
