Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 11, 2014.

The bull's head is the symbol of Mecklenburg and was also part of the arms of the former districts Müritz, Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Demmin. The griffin is the symbol of Pommerania and was taken as part of the district historically belonged to Pommerania. The griffin is also part of the arms of Altentreptow and Demmin.

The wavy base symbolises the many lakes in the district, as well as the 6 former districts and the city of Neubrandenburg.
