Wappen von Salzwedel

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms combine the arms of the two former cities, Salzwedel Altstadt and Salzwedel Neustadt, which were joined in 1713. The arms thus date from 1713. Both the cities used the red eagle of Brandenburg, as the area was ruled by the Counts of Brandenburg since 1134. The eagle also appeared on the old seals of the cities.

The keys are a symbol for the diocese of Verden, as the churches in both cities belonged to the Bishops of Verden. The Neustadt used the eagle of Brandenburg with the typical helmets on the wings, as well as an additional star. The meaning of the star is not known.
