State : Niedersachsen
District (Kreis) :Gifhorn
Official blazon
(de)
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on February 7, 1974.
The lion in the upper part is the lion of the Welfen family, and symbolises the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, to which the area belonged since 1267. The red (bloody) axe symbolises the fact that the Gograf of Papenteich (a kind of governor) had the right to sentence prisoners to death. The green plough symbolises the agricultural character of the region. The chevron symbolises a roof, the Samtgemeinde, under which the normal municipalities are joined. The symbol under the chevron symbolises the houses (wall-anchor) in the villages and prosperity (rose).
