Origin/meaning
The arms are canting, the name means Wood-Chapel. The chapel first appears on the oldest seal of the city, dating from 1581. A later, 17th century seal also shows only a chapel. In rolls of arms from the 17th century the arms, however, are shown as a chapel among trees. The composition on the shield thus differed from the composition on the seal. The arms were slightly changed in the late 19th century, but have otherwise not been changed.
