Origin/meaning

The village was the seat of a local court an became a city in 1886. The seals of the court are known since 1619 and the present arms (granted in 1954) are based on the oldest seal.

The lion in the upper part is most likely the lion of the counts of Katzenelnbogen, as the village was part of the county. The lion has also been described as the lion of Hessen, but that lion is normally barred and has different colours.

The horse-shoes are probably the oldest village sign. Horse-shoes were commonly used as village signs. The combination of the lion with some local sign was very common in the county Katzenelnbogen. The arms thus are based on an old tradition.
