Origin/meaning

Bad Herrenalb grew around the Cistercian abbey founded in 1148 and destroyed in 1535. It remained a small town until 1887 when it was granted city rights. The first known seal dates from around 1800 and shows the symbols of the abbey, the chequered bend and an crosier placed crosswise. Since the end of the last century the city uses the arms of the abbey itself, showing the same symbols as well as a white alba. The alba is also a canting element as the oldest name of the monastery was monasterium in Alba, Alba being the name of the valley in which the abbey was situated.
