Origin/meaning

Even though Nastätten was already an important village in the 9^th century, and a town in the 12^th century, it never developed into a city. City rights were granted only in 1817. The oldest seal of the town dates from the 16^th century and shows the striped lion of Hessen, as the town was at the time a possession of the Counts of Hessen-Darmstadt. In the 19^th century the lion of the County Katzenelnbogen was used, to which the town belonged.

The above arms were devised and adopted in the early 19^th century and symbolise the diligence of the population of the town. The colours are derived from the arms of the Counts of Nassau, who also ruled the County Katzenelnbogen.
