WYK AUF FÖHR

State : Schleswig-Holstein
District (Kreis) : Nordfriesland (until 1970 Südtondern)
Amt : Amt Föhr-Amrum

Wappen von Wyk auf Föhr

Official blazon

(de) Über blauen Wellen in Rot ein goldener, havarierter Dreimaster des 17. Jahrhunderts ohne Segel und mit abgebrochenen Stengen, überhöht von einem goldenen, sechsstrahligen Stern.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 29, 1956.

From the 17th to 19th century Wyk and the whole island of Föhr was dependent on trade with the Netherlands. Most men were working on Dutch owned ships for whalehunting. In 1704 Wyk became the right to own a harbour. The arms thus show a 17th century ship as a typical symbol for the town. The star is the Polar Star, symbol of the North, the way most ships went for whale hunting.

The (non official) motto "Incertum quo fata ferunt" means "nobody knows where you will be leaded".
