Origin/meaning

Rhens received city rights in the late 14^th century, but was already an important town for a century. The oldest seals date from 1291 and shows two crossed keys under a cross. The cross is the symbol of the State of Köln, the keys are the symbol for St. Peter, the patron saint of Köln. The city was a possession of the Archbishops of Köln for many centuries.

The present arms appear on the second seal, dating form the early 14^th century. The composition thus has not changed since, but the colours have often been changed during the centuries.
